If someone told you at the age of 10 that you would grow up to be an artist, and that your medium of choice would be colored pencils, what would you have done? Would you have laughed it off, or worked hard to try to meet people’s expectations? Well, 2007 Maine College of Art graduate and Chester resident Joshua Dallaire has chosen to do the latter.

He has spent the last 11 years meticulously crafting a diverse portfolio of drawings ranging in subject matter from the realistic to the abstract – or sometimes both. Joshua spends hundreds of hours on each individual piece, building up layer upon layer of intense detail, intertwining patterning and naturalism into his work. A fine selection of many of his past – and current – endeavors will be on display at 7sq Gallery/Works On Paper in Bellows Falls, VT during the months of April through June 10. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, April 20 from 6-8pm as part of this month’s Bellows Falls Third Friday (BF3F). More information about Joshua’s art can be found on his website www.joshuadallaire.com. Refreshments served. 6-8pm.

7sq Gallery at Works on Paper is pleased to announce an exhibit of pastel paintings by Vermont landscape artist, Michael Shafer.

7sq Gallery at Works on Paper is pleased to announce an exhibit of pastel paintings by Vermont landscape artist, Michael Shafer. Michael’s landscapes evoke a very strong sense of place, whether that place is just down the road in Vermont or as far away as Namibia or Sicily. Most of his artwork comes from the travels he experiences with his wife, Jeanne. He describes his relationship with art and travel as such: “I am a reluctant traveler, but once at our destination I start to settle in and observe my new surroundings. My favorite subject is the landscape and each destination provides a new and challenging array of views.” This year’s travels have taken the couple around Vermont and New Hampshire, to Lake George, as well as to France, Namibia and Sicily and all are represented in the paintings on view in this exhibit. Michael is primarily a self-taught artist and was especially influenced by Clifford West. His work has previously been exhibited in Stowe, Vermont and at juried exhibitions hosted by the Vermont Pastel Society, in which he recently was awarded an honorable mention.

Please join us at 7sq Gallery for an artist’s reception on Friday, December 16 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm as part of Bellows Falls Third Fridays. A closing party will be held on Friday, January 20 and the drawings will be on display at 7sq Gallery through February 10.

7sq Gallery is located in the front of Works on Paper, an art conservation studio specializing in the preservation of artistic and historic works on paper. The studio and gallery are open Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 6pm or by appointment.

A Rare chance to see drawings by prominent Vermont painter, Rick Hearn.

7sq Gallery and Works on Paper are pleased to announce an exhibit of drawings by renowned Vermont landscape artist, Rick Hearn. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a lesser-known side of the artist’s work. This collection of works on paper in graphite powder are ventures into exploration of imagery discovered by using reduction with erasure rather than addition with pencil. Rick Hearn describes the process as “developing meaning with some chance, leading me where the images want to go, not where I even imagined they would end up”.

Please join us at 7sq Gallery for an artist’s reception on Friday, October 21st from 6:00pm – 8:00pm as part of Bellows Falls Third Fridays.

Fading Structures – drawings by Brian Post
This exhibition is the first showing of Brian Posts drawings. He developed his immaculately detailed pen and ink style over 10 years ago while still in high school. His pieces represent various historic buildings and structures in various states of repair, disuse, and abandonment. This showing includes many images of local buildings, as well as drawings from his travels in the British Isles.

Professionally educated as a Landscape Architect, Brian runs his own business, Standing Stone Landscape Architecture in Springfield VT, where he frequently uses his drawing talents to represent his proposed designs.

Brian does accept commissions for specific buildings or structures.

Artist Statement:
When I sit down to draw, I focus on producing a precisely accurate representation. I am always striving for the finest possible lines, allowing immaculate detail. I work heavily with textures that are gradually layered. When viewed in context with the rest of the drawing these textures often create the appearance of exceptional precision.

I feel that old structures each have a story to tell. While my drawings show a moment in time, I try to reveal aspects of the story through the details in the drawing. The story can include aspects of when, how, or why the building was built, how it was used, or who used it. Many parts of the story may leave us with little more than questions. I feel the more detail I put into the drawing, the clearer the story becomes.

Deciding where the drawing stops, and what is not included, are often as important as what is what is drawn. As the drawing fades to the edges, I feel it both focuses the viewer on the selected subject and also leads to questions about what was left out of frame. In some cases the fading edges of the drawing are a reflection of the fading nature of the structure as it nears the end of its life.

The successful interplay of light and shadow are key aspects of the drawings. The subtle manipulation of light and dark areas to increase contrast, or create balanced composition, make the drawings more than just a record of particular place. Each piece attempts to draw the viewer’s eye in, and guide it around, revealing the story of the completed piece.

Are you looking for some bright colors to add to the grays of February and March?

Three businesses in downtown Bellows Falls – Works on Paper’s Gallery @ 7 The Square, Vermont Pretzel and Cookie Company, and Corinne’s Fine Tailoring – are pleased to announce an exhibition of watercolor and oil pastel paintings by Brooklyn, NY artist Linda Striedieck. Linda’s latest pieces evoke the colorful shapes and rhythms of the world around us. The forms in her paintings are organic in the sense that they emerge and evolve out of themselves. Color is used to indicate direction and structure of the shapes. A premise of the work is that shapes, by their relationship to one another, evoke a language.

Linda Striedieck received her Master’s Degree in Fine Art from Penn State University in 1964. She exhibited in the mid-Atlantic region until 1984 when she moved to Nuernberg, Germany and then to Berlin. The seemingly effortless use of paint in building images and the bold impact of German Expressionism have been an influence on her work ever since. Linda’s work has been shown in Brattleboro and Bellows Falls since 2000. Since 2008, she has been living and working in Brooklyn, New York.

Please join us for at Works on Paper for an artist’s reception on Friday, February 18th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm as part of Bellows Falls Third Fridays. The paintings will be on display in our gallery through March 31st. Additional paintings will be on display across the street at Corinne’s Fine Tailoring.

More of Linda’s new paintings and driftwood sculptures by Phyllis Rosser will be on display at the Vermont Pretzel and Cookie Company. Phyllis’s intertwining pieces have been compared by New York Times critic Barry Schwabsky to “the muscular brush strokes of Abstract Expressionist painters like Joan Mitchell and Willem de Kooning.” Vermont Pretzel will be hosting an artist’s reception on Friday, February 18th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm, also as part of the Bellows Falls Third Fridays event.

Works on Paper is an art conservation studio specializing in the preservation of artistic and historic works on paper. The front of the studio was recently converted to gallery space to feature the work of local artists who also work on paper. The studio and gallery are open Monday and Friday from 10am-6pm or by appointment. Vermont Pretzel is open Monday-Friday from 7am-3pm. Corinne’s Fine Tailoring is open by appointment only.

Works on Paper’s Gallery @ 7 The Square is pleased to announce a new exhibition of drawings by local artist Gil Perry. This is the first time Gil’s drawings have been seen together as a comprehensive body of work. The exhibit opens with an artist’s reception on Friday, December 17th from 5:00-8:00 and is part of Bellows Falls Third Fridays. The drawings will be on display through the closing reception on January 21st. Gil’s drawings are incredibly detailed imaginations built up by intensely layered marks of graphite and ink on the paper.

Gil describes his artistic process below:

“I reach a state of wonder and discovery when I draw. In an unconscious way I am developing an extraordinary vocabulary of design by letting go and giving my imagination voice. Intuitively I feel a larger gallery of images is open to me and a completely “Other” vision than I have in my conscious control. As the drawing unfolds and my poetic imagination takes over there is a great deal of restraint in my conscious mind to not give way to “pareidolia” – or seeing faces in non face objects, and to grab just any image that first emerges. In this way I descend into deeper strata of the unconscious to a more mythic realm. Leaving the mechanisms of the conscious mind behind there is a sense of leaving the world of time and entering the realm of the Eternal. It is this threshold that I call the Whispering Gallery.

When the ego becomes transparent and the center of the self dissolves into an emptiness, or cloud of unknowing, this absence is actually a presence where the divine dwells. Here images are more archetypal and numinous and there is a creative “elan vital” where life becomes new and fully alive. At these depths everything turns rich and the inner adventure bestows unending gifts and infinite creative possibilities. Since surrendering always leads to a greater return I have developed a faith that replaces the fear that I will be lost by letting go. Surrendering one’s control to a transformative vision that is always larger than what is surrendered, yet yields within it a greater totality which contains every level within the whole. Through the years I have come to think of this process as, Art as Revelation.”

Works on Paper will be exhibiting the work of New-Hampshire based Outsider Artist, Edward Kingsbury III, from from October 15 through November 19. Edward is an intuitive artist who expresses himself to find new imagery to portray his interpretation of life. The works are a peaceful and meditative focus. His understanding of his work is to be in the moment of free expression. Freedom from within is a theme throughout his creations. “To be free within, you must have an outlet which allows you to have no boundaries in your mind.” Life consists of many restrictions and boundaries art is the medium where Edward finds freedom. Edward believes that the continual exploration of intuitive movements helps the mind have greater exploration of life. His pen and ink drawings are abstract organically produced representations of life.

Leigh Niland recently returned to New Hampshire after studying in London. The prints, drawings, and paintings exhibited at 7sq Gallery were drawn from direct observation on the streets of London, the Life Rooms at the Prince’s Drawing School or printed on the famous presses at Camberwell College or Arts. The selection of work provided viewers with an unexpected take on a well-known city.

PRIVATE VIEW: 20 AUG 2010, 5- 8:30 PM
Works on Paper, LLC 7 THE SQUARE BELLOWS FALLS, VERMONT 05101
OPEN M-F 10 AM– 5PM

RECENTLY RETURNED FROM LIVING IN LONDON FOR EIGHT YEARS, AREA ARTIST LEIGH NILAND ASSEMBLES A GROUP OF DRAWINGS AND PRINTS MADE ACROSS THE POND AT WORKS ON PAPER IN BELLOWS FALLS.
Pictures, drawn from direct observation on the streets of London, the Life Rooms at the Prince’s Drawing School or printed on the famous presses at Camberwell College where both the artist and Works on Paper owner Carolyn Frisa completed their Master’s Degrees in the Arts, are brought together in a selection that gives the viewer an unexpected take on a well known city.
Line etchings from Hackney in east London where the artist lived and worked from 1999 to 2009 are simple, un-showy and depict a recently vanished district of London. Hackney, formerly famous for being a colourful/characterful place where artists and other have-nots coexisted is the soon-to-be site of the London 2012 Olympic games. Niland’s timing for living in the Hackney area coincided precisely with this transitional phase in East London and has laid substance for the major portion of her work to date.
Other work included in London Pictures are Post-Thanksgiving, a rare still-life in the artist’s repertoire that lends reference to the experience of being far from home for the holidays while Pints at 5pm holds some jubilation at the freedoms offered in far places. Life Drawings made at the Prince’s Drawing School where the artist was awarded a full year of Post Graduate study are also included in the show.
Back in America on a longer-term basis, Niland begins as Adjunct Faculty at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Printmaking this fall. Her arts practice encompasses Painting, Sculpture, Drawing and Printmaking. The artist lives and works in the Keene/Brattleboro area.
