about
Working with Works on Paper Before beginning any conservation treatment, the item(s) must first be examined and tested to determine the appropriate course of treatment. Works on Paper will provide you with a condition report and conservation treatment proposal. This will include a general condition assessment, an outline of recommended conservation procedures, recommendations for rehousing and storage, a cost estimate, and tentative completion date. Conservation treatment recommendations will be based on various factors, including the condition of the item, the predicted success of the treatment, and how the item will be used or stored following conservation. We will be happy to explain all aspects of the proposed conservation treatment and to go over any optional treatments with you.

There are several ways to have your items examined by Works on Paper:

Bring your items to the Works on Paper studio
The best way to transport an irreplaceable document, map, photograph, or work of art on paper is to pack it securely and deliver it yourself. Whenever possible, bring your items to the Works on Paper conservation studio. We are located in the heart of historic downtown Bellows Falls, next to the recently restored Opera House. Please call 802.460.1149 to make an appointment.

Ship your items to Works on Paper
It is also possible to ship your items to us. However, shipping does carry some risk since objects may be accidentally crushed, exposed to vibrations or to significant changes in temperature and relative humidity. You can reduce these risks by packing your item securely and by choosing a reliable carrier. We suggest that you ship the material to us on a Monday or Tuesday to decrease the chance of the package being left unattended or outdoors. Please let us know in advance that you will be shipping your items to us.

We recommend that you ship your item(s) by U.S. Postal Service Registered Mail (not merely First Class or Insured) whenever possible. Items sent with Registered Mail stay under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery. Packages are limited to 70 pounds and 108 inches. Size is determined by adding the longest dimension to the girth (2 x the width + 2 x the height).

Items can also be shipped by UPS or FedEx if they are covered by an insurance policy.

For items that are too large to ship by Registered Mail, or if you do not feel comfortable packing them yourself, we recommend that you contact a Fine Arts Shipping Service. They provide door-to-door shipping and many offer packing and crating services. Fine Art Shippers are located all over the country, and several of them are listed here.

On-Site Estimates
On-site estimates and collections-level surveys can also be arranged, and fees are based on an hourly or daily rate plus the cost of travel. Please contact Works on Paper if you are interested in either of these services to schedule a date and discuss the details of your collection.

Works on Paper also picks up and/or delivers items from local framers, galleries, and other clients. Please contact us to discuss the specific arrangements, including the delivery fee.

There is a $50 examination fee for the first two items.

Examination and estimates for larger collections will be based on an hourly rate. If the treatment proposal is accepted, the estimate fee will be applied to the cost of the work. Estimates are valid for one year.
